cometbus #54 - "in china with green day?!!"
once again, as he has been doing for the past 20+ years, aaron has inspired the hell out of me with his celebrated fanzine, cometbus. this issue, which is about his two-week jaunt with green day in china, left me feeling sad as well. the passage of time, the distance of friends, the mistakes that were made along the way. on the other hand, from aaron's perspective, it was invigorating to get an up-close account on what jason white has been doing for the past 10 years as their touring guitarist. i mean...octopus balls in osaka!? hell yeah, dogtown! to read more about jason and his job with green day, stay tuned for fluke #9, coming out in late spring/early summer.
you can buy cometbus, as well as fluke fanzine, at microcosm publishing.

little rock demo tape series - big cats
chino horde bid farewell following their summer '93 six-week tour of the U.S., after which burt took off for kalispell, montana. he holed up in a motel and wrote his first songs for a rock n roll band he wanted to start up. when he got back to little rock some months later, he initiated (the late) shannon yarbrough, josh bentley and colin brooks to form the big cats. jason white now plays in shannon's stead and the big cats are working on a new LP, to come out on burt's max recordings label.
here are those first songs, recorded in little rock in 1994.

black flag
i'm sitting in a laundry mat in phoenix that has wi-fi! i'm reading a book about black flag called spray paint the walls which is highly recommended! this book is full of stuff not commonly known.
i learned that this is the first song of henry's first show as black flag's frontman. note the one tattoo, the black flag "bars" he got the day of the show. can you imagine how henry must've felt at this moment? enjoy!

jason white interview in guitar player magazine
jason was interviewed in the november '09 issue of guitar player magazine. i asked him who played gilman on that first night of his arrival to the bay area and he replied with, "DOA, econochrist and rancid (with billie joe on second guitar)." makes one think that it was all meant to be. here's to jason and his hard work with green day for the past 10 years. we're all proud of you, brother!

first california stop

redlands pit stop before long beach show

5/15/09, 6:15 p.m., redlands, california
“broken van is broke again.” i met up with sean, ben and mark this morning, up in phoenix. we left for long beach around 11:45 and had a great day on the road talking and listening to some great tunes. a while after crossing into california ben noticed the (astro) van was beginning to overheat. we found a leaky radiator hose and then a corroded line and got that off here in the wal-mart parking lot. they are hoofing it to the auto parts store while i stay in the boat and listen to black sabbath. we may be able to fix it and get to the show in long beach or someone may have to pick us up. more will be revealed!

last night we finally got back on the road and made it to the house show at 11:00. the kids hanging out and waiting gave a collective cheer so loud that the cops showed up! sean annouced an impromptu show in the park in pedro the next afternoon, thinking the show was going to be cancelled. a lot of people left, thinking the same thing, but there were still a ton who stayed. mark and i set up the mersh table in the kitchen and the jihad played to an energetic crowd who sang all the songs in unison. a really nice kid named alex asked mark and i if we wanted drinks from the store and refused money so i gave him a zine. mark drank beer and i had water as we sold mersh and talked with a lot of great people. the front room where AJJ played was steaming hot and alex couldn’t really watch them because his glasses would instantly fog up when he walked in there. there were tons of people, punk rock is alive and very well in long beach! we walked to a taqueria and then back home for sleep which didn't happen until 3 a.m. and i awoke at 8:30 to a living room full of soundly sleeping punks. what a night we had! we’re playing at the park in san pedro at 2:00 today! can’t wait to visit pedro town!

we rolled into pedro around noon and i was stoked! i requested we listen to minutemen so we did just that while driving to get the yummy sandwiches at busy bee. a lot of long beach kids showed up and AJJ played a show in the park on the water and i got teary-eyed thinking about d. boon but more from the gratitude i have for life and music and friends and the spirit of that man which lives today in bands such as sean and ben’s. a lot of kids trickled in as they were playing, which was cool. oh, before the show we went to a little place called “the corner store,” where ramsey works. we met him at the house show in long beach. after the show we hung out in the park with the people who showed up, all very nice folks. i had on my mike watt shirt and an older local guy knew him from many years ago. then off to redlands! the show at the university of redlands was okay. there were some good folks there who are fans of AJJ. not a whole lot of mersh sales or even talk with the locals, they kind of passed on it. some sales, though, and the university paid AJJ well. the beer was flowing all around and everyone was having a great time bringing in summer and even graduation for some. i crash around 2:30 and get a good nights sleep on a big couch in the basement. i awoke at 9:30 and get a cup of coffee and some fruit and cereal here in the cafeteria. i’m ready to get out of here and go to riverside for a matinee then to san diego for our last show. i better go see if the crew is moving about yet. we’re all having a great time together!

i’m still half asleep, i woke up tired. the riverside show was great, a lot of young kids really into the bands. this one kid named hassan who is like 15 or so played an acoustic set with a cellist and it was pretty awesome to watch. they played a great cover of “eleanor rigby.” hassan played mandolin with AJJ during their set, which was cool. a hardline vegan guy was yelling obscenities at sean after playing the song “candle in the wind (ben’s song)” about supporting animal testing for medical purposes. it was pretty funny. after the show sean walked up and told him what he did was very rude and then they talked. sean said he wanted to give him a big hug and they hugged one another. it was all pretty funny, though. also, the lakers badly beat the rockets in game 7. there was a tv upstairs and i watched a little bit of it but realized there was no hope for a rockets victory. we sold some mersh but not too much. a friend of sean and ben’s hopped in the van and rode to san diego with us. his name is jackson and is a great guy, we crashed at his pad. he played last night’s show at che cafe in la jolla, which had a great crowd, really nice people. we sold a ton of stuff and i donated my zine to their library. oh, before the show, we ate at crazy burger in north park, where jackson lives. sean had a kangaroo and mark had crocodile! i think ben had a bbq burger. i wasn’t feeling adventurous so i had a pepper jack cheeseburger, which was very good. after the show we went to jackson’s house and watched “beer for my horses” (toby keith masterpiece!) with a few people. i crashed around 2:00 and got up around 8:00. we’re heading home today, this trip has really been good for me, it gives me hope and gratitude in life.

we left jackson’s house late morning and drove over to hillcrest for peet’s coffee! i’m a big fan of peet’s and although i can get the beans here in tucson, it’s just not the same as drinking a cup of mud straight from the source! we tried to get sushi at this place on university where all of us (except mark) have been before but they weren’t open until 11:30 and it was only 11:00 so we ended up settling for taco bell on the road. after we ate, we did an interview for the next issue of fluke, which i’m working on to get out this summer. i took the wheel and drove us back into the arizona heat. at the colorado river running through yuma is one of the hottest places in the country, i’ve heard. i believe it, it was hotter than the hinges of hades, as my ace steve says. we roll into phoenix at 4:45, making really good time. we all exchange big hugs and go our separate ways with a wonderful experience we will all carry with us for a long time to come. i get chicken and waffles and sweet tea at lo-lo’s on central and yuma before shoving off for tucson, where i arrive after 8:00. i’m tired but i feel very inspired. there were a lot of different emotions felt on this trip, some i didn’t like feeling so much but am grateful that i can feel today and work on being a better person for myself and others. andrew jackson jihad is a very special thing. this is punk rock here and now. their band could be my life.

redlands pit stop before long beach show
5/15/09, 6:15 p.m., redlands, california
“broken van is broke again.” i met up with sean, ben and mark this morning, up in phoenix. we left for long beach around 11:45 and had a great day on the road talking and listening to some great tunes. a while after crossing into california ben noticed the (astro) van was beginning to overheat. we found a leaky radiator hose and then a corroded line and got that off here in the wal-mart parking lot. they are hoofing it to the auto parts store while i stay in the boat and listen to black sabbath. we may be able to fix it and get to the show in long beach or someone may have to pick us up. more will be revealed!
